Overview

Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily K member 17 (OR4K17) is a protein-coding gene encoding an olfactory receptor involved in the recognition and transduction of odorant signals in the nose. OR4K17 is part of the largest gene family in the human genome, the olfactory receptors, and shares structural features with other G protein-coupled receptors, including a seven-transmembrane domain architecture. These receptors interact with specific molecules to initiate neuronal responses resulting in the perception of smell. OR4K17 functions are mainly sensory, and although the olfactory receptor family is broadly expressed, OR4K17 has not been implicated in disease processes or as a druggable target for pharmacological intervention

Mechanism of action

None reported for this specific receptor. Mechanisms for olfactory receptors (in general) involve G protein-mediated signal transduction upon binding odorants

03

Biological functions

Signal transductionRecognition and transduction of odorant signals (perception of smell)
04

Disease associations

Other (There are no well-established disease roles; olfactory receptors in general have been studied as potential markers in cancer and other diseases, but disease association for OR4K17 is not characterized)
