Overview

Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily K member 3 (OR4K3) belongs to the large family of olfactory receptors, which are G protein-coupled receptors involved in the detection of odorant molecules and initiation of neuronal responses leading to the perception of smell[3][5]. However, OR4K3 is specifically annotated as a pseudogene in humans[2][4], meaning it is not believed to produce a functional protein product and is not an active therapeutic target. In general, functional olfactory receptors have seven transmembrane domains and are involved in olfactory signal transduction via coupling to G proteins[1][3][5]. OR4K3 shares sequence similarity and family relationship with other family 4, subfamily K olfactory receptors such as OR4K14, OR4K15, and OR4K2[2]. There are polymorphic variations described, but no known disease associations, drug interactions, mechanism of action, biomarker utility, or safety concerns for this pseudogene.
