Overview

Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily K member 5 (OR4K5) is a protein-coding gene that encodes an odorant receptor in humans. OR4K5 is a member of the large olfactory receptor (OR) gene family, which constitutes the largest gene family in the human genome. These receptors are seven-transmembrane G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) that recognize and bind odorant molecules, initiating neuronal responses that lead to the perception of smell. Like other olfactory receptors, OR4K5 is predicted to function in olfactory signaling—specifically, detection of chemical stimuli and activation of intracellular G-protein signaling pathways—via interaction with odorant compounds in the nasal epithelium[3][4]. There is currently no evidence for drug targeting or clinical biomarker use for OR4K5, but altered OR gene expression patterns (not specifically OR4K5) have been noted in some neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases[1][3].
