Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily N member 2 is a member of the olfactory receptor (OR) family, which are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) with a seven-transmembrane domain structure. Most commonly expressed in the olfactory epithelium, these receptors are essential for detecting odorant molecules and initiating neuronal responses leading to the perception of smell. The OR gene family is the largest in the genome, and many ORs, including OR4N2, show tissue-restricted expression patterns. Recent studies reveal that some olfactory receptors, such as OR4N2, can be expressed outside the olfactory system and participate in non-olfactory physiological and potentially pathological roles, including in brain tissue and diseases such as glioma. Their functional roles in these contexts, as well as their therapeutic potential, remain subjects of ongoing research[1][2][3][5].
