Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily N member 3 pseudogene (OR4N3P) is a member of the large olfactory receptor gene family in humans, which is primarily responsible for the detection of odorants in the olfactory system[2][6]. OR4N3P is annotated as a pseudogene, meaning it contains sequence similarity to functional olfactory receptor genes but is predicted to be non-functional due to disruptions such as frameshift or nonsense mutations[5][6]. As a pseudogene, it does not encode a functional protein and is not considered a direct molecular target for drugs, disease modulation, or biomarker use. Many olfactory receptor pseudogenes exist due to relatively low selective pressure to retain all olfactory capabilities[5]. While rare exceptions exist in which pseudogenes were found to have regulatory or residual biological activity (such as through RNA products), there is no evidence that OR4N3P is functionally expressed or relevant as a therapeutic, diagnostic, or disease-associated target[5]. Some pseudogenes in other species have been shown to retain unexpected function (e.g., via translational readthrough), but this has not been reported for OR4N3P in humans[5]. OR4N3P is a pseudogene with sequence similarity to olfactory receptors but is not expressed as a functional protein or used as a medical target[2][5][6].
