Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily N member 5 (OR4N5) is a protein encoded by the OR4N5 gene in humans. It functions as an odorant receptor in the nasal olfactory epithelium, initiating signal transduction via the G protein-coupled pathway to trigger the perception of smell[4][3][5]. Like all olfactory receptors, it possesses seven transmembrane domains and responds to a wide range of odorant molecules, with broad ligand specificity[3]. The primary biological role is mediating the detection of volatile compounds, making it crucial for olfaction. The olfactory receptor family is the largest gene superfamily in the human genome, and recent studies have begun to reveal unique structural and functional properties among its members. While olfactory receptors are being investigated for roles beyond smell, including potential links to extranasal physiological processes and certain diseases, OR4N5 has not yet been directly implicated in any specific pathological condition[4][5].
