Overview

OR4U1P is a pseudogene belonging to the olfactory receptor family 4, subfamily U. A pseudogene is a DNA sequence that resembles a gene but has lost its protein-coding ability or is otherwise non-functional. This particular pseudogene is located on chromosome 14 at position 20,043,916-20,044,855 on the positive strand. The gene shows evolutionary relationships with functional olfactory receptors across species, with the most similar human paralogs being OR4K14 (54.1% similarity), OR4K2 (50.65% similarity), and OR4K3P (51.6% similarity). In other species, orthologous sequences include OR4L1 in dogs (52% similarity), Or4l15 in mice (51% similarity), and various OR4K variants in primates and other mammals. Despite being a pseudogene, OR4U1P contains sequence variations including single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and copy number variations (CNVs) that have been documented in genomic databases. The gene has multiple aliases including OR14-23, OR14-17, HsOR14.1.19P, and ORL3711, and is catalogued under HGNC ID 15361. Since OR4U1P is a pseudogene, it does not encode a functional protein and therefore is not considered a therapeutic target. It represents an evolutionary remnant of what was once likely a functional olfactory receptor gene that has accumulated mutations over time, rendering it non-functional.
