Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily X member 2 (OR4X2) is a protein-coding gene in humans, encoding a member of the olfactory receptor family—specifically a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) with a classic 7-transmembrane domain structure[1][2][3][4][5]. These receptors detect odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium, initiating G protein-mediated neuronal signaling that ultimately leads to the perception of smell[1][3][9]. Like other olfactory receptors, OR4X2 arises from single coding-exon genes and belongs to the largest gene family in the human genome[1][3][5]. The gene exhibits genetic polymorphisms in the population: in some individuals, it encodes a functional odorant receptor, while in others, a stop codon produces a nonfunctional pseudogene[3][10]. No current evidence supports its direct involvement as a therapeutic drug target, nor are there approved drugs that interact specifically with OR4X2[7][10]. Its primary biological function remains limited to roles in olfactory signal transduction.
