Overview

Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily A member 2 (OR5A2) is a member of the olfactory receptor gene family, which constitutes the largest group of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) in the human genome[2][3]. OR5A2 is principally expressed in the olfactory epithelium of the nose, where it recognizes specific odorant molecules and initiates neuronal signaling pathways, ultimately leading to the perception of smell[2][3][4][5]. The protein characteristically spans the cell membrane seven times, sharing this 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors[2][4][5]. Although OR5A2 is a typical olfactory GPCR—with a canonical role in olfaction—olfactory receptors as a class have been implicated in additional physiological roles outside the olfactory system, but there is no direct evidence of such roles for OR5A2[3]. There are currently no approved drugs or direct therapeutic interventions targeting this receptor[2][3].
