Overview

Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily AC member 1 (OR5AC1) is a member of the large family of olfactory receptors, which are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) involved in detecting odorant molecules in the nose, initiating the neuronal response responsible for the perception of smell[2][1]. OR5AC1 is unique among human olfactory receptor genes as it is a segregating pseudogene: some individuals possess a functional allele while others have a non-functional version[2]. Like other olfactory receptors, OR5AC1 shares a seven-transmembrane domain structure typical of GPCRs[2][1]. There is no evidence that OR5AC1 serves as a current therapeutic target, nor is it known to interact with any drugs or serve as a biomarker or notable disease gene in humans[2][1].
