Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily AL member 1 (OR5AL1) is a member of the large olfactory receptor gene family, which encodes G protein-coupled receptors involved in the detection of odorant molecules in the nose, leading to signal transduction for the perception of smell[2]. OR5AL1 is unusual because it is a segregating pseudogene: in some humans, an allele encodes a potentially functional receptor protein, while in others, an allele encodes a predicted non-functional protein[2]. It shares the typical 7-transmembrane domain structure of GPCRs, arising from single exon genes, and is related to other olfactory and neurotransmitter receptors[2]. OR5AL1 is not known to be a direct therapeutic target, nor is it associated with any defined disease roles, interacting drugs, or recognized biomarker or safety concerns[2]. The “pseudogene” designation, frequent use of aliases, and lack of specific drug or disease associations reflect both its questionable protein-coding status and limited functional characterization.
