Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily AP member 2 (OR5AP2) is a member of the olfactory receptor gene family in humans. These receptors are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) that detect odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium, triggering signal transduction pathways that result in the perception of smell. OR5AP2 binds to specific odorants, activating intracellular G proteins and promoting the production of cAMP, which subsequently opens ion channels and initiates an action potential in olfactory sensory neurons. Like other olfactory receptors, it has a seven-transmembrane domain structure and is predominantly expressed in the olfactory epithelium. Some reports also associate this receptor with pathways in non-olfactory tissues and mention a possible role in diseases such as ovarian cancer, but no direct mechanistic or therapeutic link has been established.
Ligand (odorant) binds receptor, activating G protein-coupled signaling pathways, leading to cAMP production, ion channel opening, neuronal depolarization, and signal transmission to the brain. No characterized pharmacological modulators or inhibitors
