Overview

Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily AR member 1 (OR5AR1) is a human protein encoded by the OR5AR1 gene. This receptor is a member of the large family of olfactory G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and is typically found in the cell membranes of olfactory sensory neurons. Like other olfactory receptors, OR5AR1 features a 7-transmembrane domain structure and is involved in the detection and recognition of odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium, which initiates the neuronal signaling ultimately perceived as smell[3][5][7]. Olfactory receptors mediate signal transduction by coupling with olfactory-type G proteins and triggering downstream signaling pathways leading to action potentials and sensory perception of odors. The gene encoding OR5AR1 is described as a "segregating pseudogene," meaning some human alleles encode a functional receptor, while others are predicted to be non-functional[3][8]. The olfactory receptor family is highly diverse and constitutes the largest gene family in the human genome[3][5][7]. There are no widely reported drug interactions, safety concerns, or disease associations specifically linked to OR5AR1—its function is primarily related to normal olfactory signal detection and transduction, with no established role as a disease biomarker or therapeutic drug target in current medical literature[3][5][7].
