Overview

Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily AS member 1 (OR5AS1) is a G protein-coupled receptor expressed in the olfactory epithelium, where it binds odorant molecules in the nasal cavity and triggers neuronal signals responsible for the perception of smell. Like other olfactory receptors, it has a characteristic 7-transmembrane domain structure and is encoded by a single exon gene. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome, consisting of hundreds of individual receptor genes that collectively enable the detection of a vast array of chemical odorants[4].

Biological functions

Signal transductionOdorant recognition
03

Disease associations

Other (no direct disease association known; olfactory receptor function loss has been associated with general anosmia but not with specific diseases for this receptor[4])
04

Safety considerations

None known; olfactory receptors are not typical drug targets and are generally not associated with systemic safety concerns[4]
