Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily AU member 1 (OR5AU1) is a human odorant receptor and a member of the large olfactory receptor (OR) gene family. Like other olfactory receptors, it is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) characterized by a 7-transmembrane domain structure shared with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. OR5AU1 is responsible for recognizing specific odorant molecules in the nasal cavity, initiating a neuronal response that leads to the perception of smell. Olfactory receptors function through G protein-mediated transduction of odorant signals. While OR5AU1 is principally associated with the sense of smell, the olfactory receptor family has been detected in some nonolfactory tissues and implicated in a wide range of physiological processes, but specific nonolfactory roles for OR5AU1 are unreported. There are no known drugs or therapeutic agents targeting this receptor, and it is not currently used as a biomarker or associated with notable safety concerns.
