Overview

Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily AW member 1 pseudogene (OR5AW1P) is a pseudogene classified within the large family of olfactory receptor genes, which normally encode G protein-coupled receptors responsible for detecting odorant molecules in the nose and mediating the sense of smell[3][4]. However, as a pseudogene, OR5AW1P does not produce a functional protein product and thus does not participate in the biological functions typical of other olfactory receptors. Olfactory receptor pseudogenes are common in the human genome, resulting from mutations that render what were once functional genes non-coding and non-functional[3][4][5]. No drugs, disease implications, or biomarker roles are associated with this pseudogene.
