Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily BA member 1 pseudogene (OR5BA1P) is classified as a human pseudogene within the large family of olfactory receptor (OR) genes. Olfactory receptors (including functional ORs and their pseudogenes) are part of the class A rhodopsin-like G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily and are primarily responsible for detecting odorant molecules and initiating neuronal responses in the olfactory epithelium[3][4]. However, as a pseudogene, OR5BA1P is considered nonfunctional in humans: it does not encode an active receptor protein due to disruptive mutations, such as frameshifts or premature stop codons[4][5]. While some OR pseudogenes in other species may retain function through rare mechanisms like translational read-through, there is no evidence that OR5BA1P is functional or has therapeutic or diagnostic relevance in humans[1][5]. Thus, it is not a valid therapeutic target, and no drugs, disease associations, or safety concerns are known. The entry as a pseudogene means something is "wrong" with it as a target: it does not translate to a functional protein and, by convention, should be excluded from target lists for drug discovery.
