Overview

Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily C member 1 (OR5C1) is a member of the largest G protein-coupled receptor family in the human genome. Expressed primarily in the olfactory epithelium, OR5C1 initiates sensory perception of smell by binding odorant molecules and activating intracellular G proteins, leading to neuronal signaling. Olfactory receptors, including OR5C1, possess a characteristic seven transmembrane domain structure, closely related to neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. While their canonical function is in olfaction, emerging research suggests some family members may play roles in extranasal tissues, but OR5C1 has no established therapeutic or pathophysiological role outside olfaction[3][4][2].
