Overview

Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily D member 14 (OR5D14) is a member of the large family of human olfactory receptors, which are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) characterized by seven transmembrane domains[1][4][5]. OR5D14 is encoded by a single coding-exon gene and is responsible for recognizing specific odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium, initiating a neuronal response that leads to the perception of smell[1][4]. Like other olfactory receptors, OR5D14 couples to G proteins to transduce olfactory signals and is part of the largest gene family in the human genome[1][4][5]. Though primarily studied for its role in olfactory sensation, some olfactory receptors have functional roles in other tissues, and dysregulation of related genes has been hypothesized (but not confirmed for OR5D14) to play roles in diseases including hyaline fibromatosis syndrome and distal myopathy[4][5]. No drugs or therapeutics are currently known to target OR5D14, and it is not established as a biomarker or therapeutic target in clinical medicine.
