Overview

Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily D member 17 pseudogene (OR5D17P) is a human gene that represents a pseudogene derived from the olfactory receptor gene family. Olfactory receptors are typically members of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily, critical for odorant recognition and initiation of neuronal responses related to smell. However, as a pseudogene, OR5D17P is considered non-functional for protein-coding; it does not produce a functional olfactory receptor protein. Pseudogenes commonly arise from gene duplication or mutation events and are characterized by premature stop codons, frameshifts, or other inactivating mutations rendering them unable to encode intact receptors[1][2][7][8][9]. Most olfactory receptor pseudogenes do not contribute to olfactory signaling, though rare exceptions exist where pseudogene-derived sequences have regulatory or residual functional potential[1]. OR5D17P has no established pharmacological roles and is not considered a therapeutic target.
