Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily D member 2 pseudogene (OR5D2P) is classified as a pseudogene in humans, meaning it is a genomic sequence similar to functional olfactory receptor genes, but it contains mutations that prevent it from producing a functional olfactory receptor protein[1][2][3][4][7]. While functional olfactory receptors are G protein–coupled receptors (GPCRs) responsible for detecting odorant molecules and initiating neuronal responses related to the perception of smell, pseudogenes in this family like OR5D2P do not encode a protein or exert functional biological activity in odor recognition[1][3][7]. Olfactory receptor pseudogenes are considered non-coding “dead” sequences, products of the dynamic evolution and turnover of the large olfactory receptor gene family in mammals[3]. There is no evidence that OR5D2P functions as a therapeutic target or is involved in disease biology.
