These receptors recognize and bind volatile odorant molecules, triggering a G protein-mediated signaling cascade that ultimately results in the perception of smell[2][5]. Like other olfactory receptors, OR5D3 is presumed to function by binding odorant molecules and activating olfactory-type G proteins (G_olf_), leading to cAMP-mediated depolarization of the olfactory neuron and transmission of olfactory information to the brain[2].
