Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily D member 3 (OR5D3) is a member of the olfactory GPCR superfamily, which are seven-transmembrane domain proteins expressed primarily in the nasal epithelium. These receptors recognize and bind volatile odorant molecules, triggering a G protein-mediated signaling cascade that ultimately results in the perception of smell[2][5]. Like other olfactory receptors, OR5D3 is presumed to function by binding odorant molecules and activating olfactory-type G proteins (G_olf_), leading to cAMP-mediated depolarization of the olfactory neuron and transmission of olfactory information to the brain[2]. The full repertoire of ligands, expression pattern, and clinical importance of OR5D3 remain poorly characterized; it is not established as a disease or pharmacological target. There is some evidence that olfactory receptor genes can be expressed in non-olfactory tissues and may play broader physiological roles[5], but specific data for OR5D3 are lacking.
