Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily E member 1 pseudogene (OR5E1P; also known as HSTPCR24 or TPCR24) is a human gene classified as a pseudogene, meaning it is a nonfunctional remnant of a protein-coding gene, likely derived from an ancestral olfactory receptor gene. While functional olfactory receptor genes encode members of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family that detect odorants and initiate sensory signaling in the olfactory system, pseudogenes such as OR5E1P are typically not expressed as functional proteins and do not play a role in signal transduction or sensory perception. There is no evidence that OR5E1P is involved in disease, interacts with drugs, or serves as a therapeutic target. Pseudogenes are generally regarded as byproducts of genome evolution and have no known impact on physiology or pharmacology, although exceptional cases of pseudogene functionality have been described mainly in model organisms rather than in humans.
