Overview

Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily G member 1 pseudogene (OR5G1P) is classified as a pseudogene, meaning it is a DNA sequence similar to that of a functional olfactory receptor gene but contains mutations or disruptions that prevent it from encoding a functional protein[3][7][1]. Olfactory receptor genes typically code for G protein-coupled receptors that detect odorants; however, pseudogenes such as OR5G1P are not transcribed or translated into active protein products. As a result, OR5G1P does not participate in signal transduction or other biological pathways usually associated with olfactory receptors and has no known role as a therapeutic target, disease biomarker, or drug interaction partner. While some pseudogenes can exert regulatory effects (such as acting as long non-coding RNAs or ceRNAs), there is currently no evidence that OR5G1P is functionally involved in such mechanisms[4]. The locus is notable primarily for genomic annotation and evolutionary studies of the olfactory receptor gene family.
