Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily G member 4 pseudogene (OR5G4P) is classified as a pseudogene within the large family of human olfactory receptors. Olfactory receptors typically interact with odorant molecules in the nose, initiating a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. However, OR5G4P contains sequence changes, such as nonsense or frameshift mutations, that render it non-functional as a protein-coding gene. It is annotated on chromosome 11 and does not produce an active receptor protein. There is no evidence supporting its role as a therapeutic target, nor is it linked to human disease or currently known to have regulatory or other functional roles. Pseudogenes, including OR5G4P, usually arise from formerly functional genes and typically lack biological activity. Though some pseudogenes can have regulatory RNA functions or rare translational readthrough in other species, there is no evidence this occurs for OR5G4P in humans. Olfactory receptor family genes are the largest gene family in the human genome, with more pseudogenes (nonfunctional copies) than active genes.
