Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily G member 5 pseudogene is annotated as a member of the olfactory receptor gene superfamily on human chromosome 11 but is classified a pseudogene, meaning it contains sequence similarities to odorant receptors but does not produce a functional protein[7]. Olfactory receptors are seven-transmembrane domain G protein-coupled receptors responsible for the detection of odor molecules in the nose, initiating signal transduction that leads to the perception of smell in vertebrates[2][4][7]. However, OR5G5P, due to accumulated inactivating mutations or gene disruptions acquired during evolution, does not encode a functional odorant receptor protein and is unlikely to play a role in sensory perception or disease[7][8]. Pseudogenization of olfactory receptors is common in humans and reflects evolutionary downgrading of certain olfactory functions, with a significant fraction (over 50%) of the OR gene repertoire being non-functional[8]. OR5G5P is not considered a therapeutic target and there are no known drugs, disease associations, biological functions, or safety considerations tied to this locus. Its main relevance is as a genomic annotation indicating the structure and evolutionary history of the olfactory receptor gene family in humans.
