Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily H member 14 (OR5H14) is a protein-coding gene in humans. The protein, also known as olfactory receptor 5H14, is a member of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily, specifically characterized by its 7-transmembrane domain structure. OR5H14 is involved in initial odorant molecule recognition within the nasal olfactory epithelium, triggering G protein-mediated signal cascades that result in the perception of smell. Olfactory receptors like OR5H14 represent the largest gene family in the human genome and are structurally related to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. Although their primary role is in olfactory signaling, olfactory receptors as a broader family are also expressed in other tissues and may have additional physiological roles outside the olfactory system. Some associations with rare congenital disease phenotypes have been noted, but there is currently no established therapeutic targeting or drug interaction for OR5H14 specifically.
