Overview

Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily H member 8 (OR5H8) is a member of the olfactory receptor gene family, which encodes seven-transmembrane domain G protein-coupled receptors involved in odorant signal transduction in the nose[6]. Olfactory receptors are the largest gene family in the genome and initiate neuronal responses that enable the perception of smells. OR5H8 is classified as a *segregating pseudogene*, with some humans having a functional form and others a predicted non-functional version. There is no direct evidence for disease association or pharmacological targeting of OR5H8, and it primarily functions in recognizing specific odorants. Structural and mechanistic studies of similar olfactory receptors (e.g., OR51E2) illustrate the GPCR architecture, odorant binding within a dedicated pocket, and roles in signal transduction[1][3][5][6].

Biological functions

Signal transduction (odorant recognition in the nasal epithelium)Other: Initiation of neuronal response for smell perception

Disease associations

Other: Variability in odor perception; no validated roles in major diseases. Dysregulation in other olfactory receptors may have disease associations, but OR5H8 itself is not implicated
