Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily I member 1 (OR5I1)

Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily I member 1 (OR5I1) is a member of the olfactory receptor family of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) responsible for the recognition and transduction of odorant molecules in the nose, initiating the neuronal response involved in the perception of smell[1][5][7]. OR5I1, like other olfactory receptors, possesses a canonical seven transmembrane domain architecture similar to other GPCRs, and is encoded by a single coding-exon gene[1][5][7]. Olfactory receptors belong to the largest gene family in the human genome and mediate signal transduction through G-protein-mediated pathways upon activation by odorant molecules[1][2][5][7]. While some olfactory receptors have been implicated in physiological and possibly pathophysiological roles outside the olfactory system, OR5I1 itself does not have established links to any therapeutic applications or major disease areas[5][6].
