Overview

Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily I member 1 (OR5I1) is a member of the olfactory receptor family of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) responsible for the recognition and transduction of odorant molecules in the nose, initiating the neuronal response involved in the perception of smell[1][5][7]. OR5I1, like other olfactory receptors, possesses a canonical seven transmembrane domain architecture similar to other GPCRs, and is encoded by a single coding-exon gene[1][5][7]. Olfactory receptors belong to the largest gene family in the human genome and mediate signal transduction through G-protein-mediated pathways upon activation by odorant molecules[1][2][5][7]. While some olfactory receptors have been implicated in physiological and possibly pathophysiological roles outside the olfactory system, OR5I1 itself does not have established links to any therapeutic applications or major disease areas[5][6]. There is evidence that the OR5I1 locus has been subject to positive selection in human populations, suggesting possible evolutionary adaptation related to olfactory function[6]. No drugs or biomarkers are known to specifically target or use OR5I1, nor are there major safety or therapeutic concerns described in the literature[5][7][6].
