Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily J member 2 (OR5J2) is a member of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily, structurally characterized by seven transmembrane domains[2][5][8]. OR5J2 is encoded by a single coding-exon gene and is part of the largest gene family in the human genome. Functionally, the receptor is involved in the initial detection of odorant molecules in the nasal olfactory epithelium, triggering neuronal responses that underlie the sense of smell[2][8][7]. Like other olfactory receptors, OR5J2 recognizes and binds odorant molecules, activating intracellular signaling via G proteins, particularly G_olf, leading to cAMP production and neuronal firing. While olfactory receptors are primarily associated with the sense of smell, some may also have nonolfactory roles in tissues outside the olfactory system, but there is currently no specific evidence for nonolfactory or disease-specific function of OR5J2[7][8].
