Overview

OR5J7P (Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily J member 7 pseudogene) is a human gene classified as a pseudogene, derived from the olfactory receptor gene family. The olfactory receptor family constitutes the largest group of G protein-coupled receptors and plays a key role in the sense of smell by interacting with odorant molecules and initiating neuronal responses. However, OR5J7P does not code for a functional receptor protein and is considered a non-functional genetic element resulting from evolutionary processes that disrupt its coding potential, such as nonsense or frameshift mutations. There is no evidence that OR5J7P has protein-coding activity or functional relevance in physiological or pathological contexts[1][3][7]. In rare cases, some olfactory receptor pseudogenes in other species (e.g., Drosophila) may be translated via specialized mechanisms (translational readthrough) and retain function[4][5]. However, no evidence suggests this is the case for human OR5J7P. The functional, protein-coding olfactory receptors are often therapeutic and research targets (for example, drug discovery in sensing, metabolism, or neurobiology), but pseudogenes like OR5J7P are generally excluded from such consideration[1][3][7].
