Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily K member 1 (OR5K1) is part of the large family of olfactory receptors that are responsible for detecting odorant molecules in the nose and initiating the neuronal responses leading to the perception of smell. OR5K1 is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) characterized by its 7-transmembrane domain structure, common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. The gene is located on chromosome 3 and is functional in humans rather than being a pseudogene. OR5K1 has recently been characterized as a specialized odorant receptor for detecting pyrazine-based key food odorants[3][1][4][5][2]. There is no evidence to indicate that it is a target for therapeutic intervention, nor is it associated with specific disease mechanisms, biomarkers, drug interactions, or notable safety concerns, but it is essential in the normal biological process of olfaction[4][5][2].
