Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily K member 2 (OR5K2) is a member of the large family of human olfactory receptors, which are seven-transmembrane domain proteins belonging to the class A G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily[5]. OR5K2 is encoded by the OR5K2 gene and functions primarily in the nasal olfactory epithelium, where it detects specific odorant molecules and initiates neuronal signaling through activation of heterotrimeric G proteins[1][5]. Each olfactory receptor typically recognizes a range of structurally related odorants, contributing to the perception of smell through combinatorial receptor activation. Structural studies of related olfactory receptors have elucidated the ligand-binding pockets and activation mechanisms of this receptor class, although OR5K2 itself has not been structurally characterized in detail[1][2]. While olfactory receptors are traditionally limited to the sense of smell, some evidence suggests that olfactory receptors, in general, may have physiological roles outside the olfactory epithelium[5]. There are no known pharmaceutical drugs or disease associations with OR5K2.
