Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily M member 1 (OR5M1) is a member of the large family of olfactory receptors, which are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) responsible for the recognition and G protein-mediated transduction of odorant signals in the nose[3][7]. OR5M1, like all olfactory receptors, has a canonical seven-transmembrane domain structure typical of GPCRs and is encoded by a single exon gene[3][7]. These receptors detect odorant molecules, leading to the activation of a neuronal response that underlies the sense of smell. Olfactory receptors constitute the largest gene family in the human genome. While olfactory receptor proteins collectively are essential for olfaction, individual family members such as OR5M1 do not have documented roles in disease or established pharmacological targeting[3][7].
