Overview

Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily M member 4 pseudogene (OR5M4P) is a non-protein-coding member of the olfactory receptor gene superfamily in humans. Olfactory receptor genes, including pseudogenes like OR5M4P, are typically intronless and form the largest gene family in vertebrate genomes. While functional olfactory receptors are G-protein-coupled receptors that detect odorant molecules and initiate the perception of smell, a high percentage of human olfactory receptor genes are pseudogenes, meaning they have lost the ability to encode functional proteins due to mutations or gene disruptions. OR5M4P does not contribute to odor detection or any known biological pathway, and has no therapeutic or diagnostic relevance[1][2][6].
