Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily M member 5 pseudogene refers to a nonfunctional, pseudogenized member of the olfactory receptor gene family in humans. The olfactory receptor gene family encodes G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) that detect odor molecules, but many human OR genes are actually pseudogenes that have accumulated deleterious mutations and no longer code for functional receptors. This reflects an evolutionary trend where primates, including humans, have lost many olfactory receptor functions over time due to reduced reliance on smell. As such, this pseudogene does not produce a functional protein and does not have a recognized role as a therapeutic target. There are no known drugs, biomarkers, or disease associations with this pseudogene.
