Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily M member 9 (OR5M9) is a protein-coding G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) present in humans, involved in the recognition of odorant molecules in the nose and initiating the neuronal response that enables the perception of smell. OR5M9 belongs to the large olfactory receptor gene family, sharing the characteristic 7-transmembrane domain structure of GPCRs found in many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. These receptors function by binding odorant ligands and activating G protein-mediated intracellular signaling pathways, which ultimately create the sense of smell. The nomenclature of olfactory receptor genes is species-specific and independent from other organisms. To date, OR5M9 has not been linked to any major disease roles, is not a target of drugs, nor is used as a biomarker or associated with safety concerns in therapy.
