Overview

Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily S member 1 pseudogene (OR5S1P) is a member of the human olfactory receptor gene family, but represents a pseudogene—a DNA sequence with homology to G protein-coupled olfactory receptor genes that has lost its ability to code for a functional protein due to disruptive mutations such as frameshifts or premature stop codons. In humans, the majority of olfactory receptor pseudogenes are non-functional and do not participate in odor detection or signal transduction. In other species, rare instances of so-called "pseudo-pseudogenes" have been discovered, where mRNA is translated via mechanisms such as stop codon readthrough, yielding some protein function. No evidence suggests that OR5S1P is expressed as a functional protein in humans or has biological, disease, or therapeutic roles.
