Overview

Olfactory receptor family 51 subfamily A member 1 pseudogene (OR51A1P) is a human gene classified as a pseudogene, meaning it does not encode a functional protein product. It is part of the large olfactory receptor gene family, which typically encodes G protein-coupled receptors with seven-transmembrane domains that recognize odorant molecules and trigger neuronal responses for smell perception. However, OR51A1P lacks the necessary protein-coding features (including a full seven-transmembrane domain structure), and experimental evidence as well as computational predictions indicate it is non-functional. It is not considered a therapeutic or druggable target. It is located within a cluster of olfactory receptor genes, some of which are deleted in certain populations along with the β-globin gene in β-thalassemia, although no direct disease association or clinical consequence has been attributed to OR51A1P itself.
