Overview

Olfactory receptor family 51 subfamily A member 10 pseudogene (OR51A10P) is classified as a human pseudogene and does not encode a functional olfactory receptor protein[7]. The designation of “pseudogene” indicates loss of normal coding capacity, typically due to mutations or truncations that abolish functional expression[5][7]. Olfactory receptor pseudogenes such as OR51A10P are remnants of the large family of olfactory receptor genes, which originally encoded G protein-coupled receptors responsible for detecting odorant molecules in the chemosensory system[7]. Although most pseudogenes do not produce proteins and are not drug targets, some pseudogene transcripts in other contexts have been found to regulate the expression of related coding genes via noncoding RNA mechanisms, such as microRNA decoy activity or RNA interference[8]. However, there is currently no evidence that OR51A10P itself has such regulatory roles, disease relevance, or clinical utility, nor is it considered a therapeutic target.
