Overview

Olfactory receptor family 51 subfamily A member 2 (OR51A2) is a member of the large olfactory receptor gene family, which encodes G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) responsible for detecting odorant molecules in the nose and initiating neuronal responses that enable the perception of smell[5][6]. OR51A2 displays the canonical 7-transmembrane domain topology of GPCRs and interacts in particular with small volatile compounds, notably short-chain fatty acids such as propionate and acetic acid. These odorant molecules bind within a specific and compact binding pocket of the receptor, leading to conformational changes and receptor activation via G protein signaling[2][3]. OR51A2 is primarily expressed in olfactory sensory neurons and is not currently associated with specific disease mechanisms or therapeutic interventions. Its role is restricted to sensory transduction in the olfactory system[6].
