Olfactory receptor family 51 subfamily A member 4 (OR51A4) is a member of the olfactory receptor protein family, which constitutes the largest gene family in the human genome[1][5][7]. OR51A4 is a G protein-coupled receptor located in the olfactory epithelium, where it is responsible for the recognition and transduction of odorant molecules (chemicals detected as smells). Like all olfactory receptors, it consists of seven transmembrane helices and activates G proteins to initiate a neuronal signal that is ultimately perceived by the brain as an odor[1][5][7]. Olfactory receptors are not currently established as direct therapeutic targets and are distinguished by their functional specificity for odorant molecules rather than drugs or pharmacological agents[1][5]. While OR51A4's basic physiology and structure are documented, there is no evidence for its involvement in major human diseases, nor as a biomarker or safety concern in a therapeutic context[5][1][7].
