Overview

Olfactory receptor family 51 subfamily B member 3 pseudogene (OR51B3P) is a non-functional DNA sequence derived from olfactory receptor genes; it lacks protein-coding capability due to nonsense or frameshift mutations[1][2][3][5]. Olfactory pseudogenes arise because of low evolutionary pressure to maintain function in receptors that are redundant or no longer needed for species survival[4]. While some pseudogenes have regulatory RNA roles or very rarely are found to be expressed as functional proteins (pseudo-pseudogenes)[4], there is no current evidence that OR51B3P has any functional or disease role in humans[1][3][5][6]. It belongs to the large family of olfactory receptor genes, which are generally G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) responsible for odorant detection, but as a pseudogene, OR51B3P does not encode a functional receptor protein[1][5].
