Overview

Olfactory receptor family 51 subfamily D member 1 (OR51D1) is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) belonging to the olfactory receptor family, the largest group of GPCRs in the human genome[2]. Like other olfactory receptors, OR51D1 shares a 7-transmembrane domain structure typical of GPCRs and operates by recognizing odorant molecules in the nasal olfactory epithelium, thereby initiating a neuronal response that triggers smell perception[2][3][4][5]. Olfactory receptors, including OR51D1, are encoded by single coding-exon genes and can also be expressed in extranasal tissues, though their functional significance outside of the olfactory system is still being studied. While other receptors in the family have been structurally characterized and functionally linked to additional physiological or disease roles, there is currently no established association between OR51D1 itself and specific diseases, drugs, or safety concerns[3].
