Overview

Olfactory receptor family 51 subfamily F member 1 (OR51F1) is part of the largest family of G protein-coupled receptors, primarily responsible for odorant detection in the human nasal epithelium. Like other olfactory receptors, it typically displays a seven-transmembrane domain structure that interacts with G proteins to transduce chemical signals from inhaled odorants into neuronal activity, triggering the sensation of smell. The OR51F1 gene is a segregating pseudogene: in some individuals the allele encodes a functional protein, while in others it encodes a non-functional product. As a member of the Class I subfamily, it is likely specialized for detection of hydrophilic odorants. This receptor is not associated with any currently defined disease, is not targeted by drugs, and is primarily relevant for sensory perception.
