Olfactory receptor family 51 subfamily F member 5 pseudogene (OR51F5P) is a human gene classified as a pseudogene, meaning it resembles functional genes for olfactory receptors but contains genetic disruptions that prevent it from encoding a functional protein. Olfactory receptors, including those from family 51 subfamily F, are normally G protein-coupled receptors involved in detecting odorants and initiating smell perception. However, OR51F5P does not produce a functional receptor protein and is considered non-functional in humans. Its sequence is part of the large olfactory receptor gene family, which has many pseudogenes due to evolutionary processes and gene family expansion[1][3][5]. There is no evidence of functional protein expression or biological activity from this locus in humans, nor is it considered a therapeutic target[1][2][3]. Some studies in other species have identified occasionally "active" pseudogenes through processes like translational readthrough, but this phenomenon is not established for human OR51F5P[2][4].
