Olfactory receptor family 51 subfamily G member 1 (OR51G1) is a member of the large olfactory receptor gene family responsible for the detection of odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium. This protein is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) with a canonical 7-transmembrane domain structure, mediating signal transduction from odorant binding to neuronal activation involved in the sense of smell. The gene can be found as a segregating pseudogene in the population, where some individuals have a functional allele and others a nonfunctional version. OR51G1, like other olfactory receptors, may be expressed primarily in the nasopharyngeal epithelium and is part of the largest gene family in the human genome[3][4][5]. While some olfactory receptors, such as OR51E2, have known ligands and have been explored as drug targets, there is no evidence that OR51G1 itself is currently a therapeutic drug target or that it binds any drugs[3][4].
