Olfactory receptor family 51 subfamily L member 1 (OR51L1) is a protein in humans encoded by the OR51L1 gene. OR51L1 belongs to the olfactory receptor (OR) family, which are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) with a characteristic 7-transmembrane domain structure[3][5][6][7]. These receptors are primarily responsible for the recognition of odorant molecules in the nose, initiating a neuronal response that leads to the perception of smell[3][5]. Like other olfactory receptors, OR51L1 is derived from a single coding-exon gene and is part of the largest gene family in the human genome[3][5]. Olfactory receptors operate by binding specific odorant molecules and activating intracellular G proteins, thereby transducing chemical signals into electrical impulses in sensory neurons[3][5][7]. While the physiological function of most olfactory receptors, including OR51L1, is sensory, recent evidence suggests that some ORs may have additional roles in nonolfactory tissues, but no such specific role is confirmed for OR51L1[7]. OR51L1 is not known to be a therapeutic target, is not associated with specific diseases, and has no known direct drug interactors.
