Olfactory receptor family 51 subfamily Q member 1 (OR51Q1) is a protein-coding gene in humans comprising a seven-transmembrane domain typical of G protein-coupled receptors. Like other olfactory receptors, OR51Q1 interacts with odorant molecules in the nose, triggering neuronal signals that initiate the perception of smell. These receptors form the largest gene family in the genome, each potentially recognizing different odorants. Olfactory receptors can share structural similarity with neurotransmitter and hormone receptors, but their primary biological function is chemosensory signal transduction for olfaction. No therapeutic drugs are known to interact with OR51Q1, and it is not considered a current therapeutic target in drug development.
