Overview

Olfactory receptor family 51 subfamily S member 1 (OR51S1) is a protein encoded by the OR51S1 gene in humans. It belongs to the olfactory receptor family, which forms the largest group of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) in the human genome. OR51S1, like other olfactory receptors, is characterized by a 7-transmembrane domain structure and is primarily responsible for the detection of odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium, initiating the neuronal signaling pathways that result in the perception of smell. Olfactory receptors typically exhibit a broad affinity for structurally diverse odorants, and signal via heterotrimeric G proteins, particularly the olfactory-specific G_olf_. While recent structural studies on related receptors provide general insight into odorant binding and activation, there is no evidence supporting a therapeutic or diagnostic use for OR51S1 at this time. Some olfactory receptors are expressed outside the olfactory system and have been proposed to play roles in diverse physiological processes, but specific functions or disease associations for OR51S1 beyond olfaction have not been established[2][4][5][7].
